A slow walk from Flinders Street Station

Some of Melbourne’s best-known sights sit within a few minutes of each other. This short walk starts under the clocks and lets you choose your own way from there.

Under the clocks

Flinders Street Station is an easy place to begin. Stand across the road for a moment and watch the trams pass in front of the dome. Early morning and the blue hour, when the lights come on, are lovely times to photograph it.

Towards the river

Cross to Princes Bridge and look along the Yarra. From here you can follow the promenade at Southbank, with the city skyline beside you and, on a calm morning, rowers out on the water.

Or into the laneways

Turn the other way and you’ll find Degraves Street and Centre Place, narrow lanes lined with small cafés. Further along, the Block Arcade and the Royal Arcade are worth walking through slowly. Look up at the glass roof, and down at the mosaic floor.

Leave time to pause

Finish at the State Library Victoria, where the domed reading room is one of the city’s most beautiful interiors. Or simply find a table, order a coffee and watch the city go by.

Before you go

Tram trips that begin and end within the Free Tram Zone are free. Check the official journey planner for travel beyond it, and the opening hours for the arcades and the library.
